SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture is a private Norwegian Research Foundation representing a wide range of scientific disciplines and industrial experience for utilization of marine biomass. Highly specialized laboratories and an experienced staff are available for experimental work within fishing - and aquaculture technology, fish processing and biological research. By offering this specialized know-how from a single field or on a multidisciplinary basis we are attractive co-operative partners to industry and the public sector at home and abroad.
Housed in the North Sea Centre is the part of SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture working with design and construction of fishing gear. The institute have the management of the North Sea Centre Flume Tank, a 1200 m3 tank used for testing scale models of fishing gear. This tank has since the beginning of the 1980's been used by net manufacturers and fishermen for testing and demonstrating fishing gear and for numerous research projects, especially within energy savings and selective fishing trawls.
The head office of SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture is based in Trondheim, Norway and has a staff of about 50. The fields of activity are fishery technology, food processing, bioresources, aquaculture technology, and international development programmes. SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture performs basic and contract research projects in close cooperation with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Together, the two institutions form a centre of technological expertise of high international standard. Through this partnership, industry and the public sector can recruit specializedgraduates (masters and doctoral levels). In addition we can offer confidential contract research. This integration of research and educational activities and strategic relationships with the fisheries and aquaculture industry and their organizations is beneficial for all parties. For us, it has resulted in a close understanding of our customers' present and future requirements for research activities.
